Still Life (三峡好人) literally translates to Three Gorges Good People. The title is a reference to the Three Gorges dam that is displacing the residents of Fangjie along with the phrase 'good people', which appears in the film as a sort of ironic joke. But Still Life is filled with good people. This is a poetic, beautiful film filled with strange and impactful images that I found deeply moving. Zhao Tao (who I loved so much in Ash Is Purest White) and Han Sanming are wonderful. I am excited to watch them both in Mountains May Depart, which I'll be watching soon since it (like Still Life) is leaving the Criterion Channel at the end of the month.

The Message (1976)
Moustapha Akkad's film The Message begins with a title card that tells us that in accordance with Islam, there will be no representation of the prophet Muhammad in the movie. Accordingly, I assumed that The Message would not be about Muhammad.
I was incorrect. This is a three-hour religious film (in the vein, of course, of Ben-Hur and Quo Vadis? and The Robe) whose subject is the founding of Islam and whose central character is the prophet of Islam, Muhammad. The film does not know how to deal with this. The Message literally has no central character. Muhammad doesn't speak; Muhammad doesn't show up. He has no feelings; he doesn't do anything. Every once in a while characters speak to him or look at him, but all the camera can do is ask the performers to look directly out at us. It's bizarre. My understanding is that this desire not to show the prophet or represent him is to avoid worshipping him. But The Message is a hagiography without a saint; it makes so much more of Muhammad than a humanized narrative like The Robe or Quo Vadis? might make.
The movie might have been something with a main character, but as it is it's a long historical epic with a bunch of supporting characters we barely know. It's other main point is to justify religious violence, which... is exhausting honestly. I have no time for a film that does this kind of justification. I thought this movie was terrible.

Coming to America 2 (2021)
Listen, hate all you want, but Coming 2 America made me laugh a lot. It's not out of control funny, but it has some really solid jokes.
And most importantly the gowns. Actually, the suits too! Ruth Carter fucking outdid herself on this movie. Nomzamo Mbatha's wedding dress had my jaw on the floor. Every outfit is incredible. It's extraordinary work. Ruth Carter is a national treasure.
This film was also justly nominated for hair and makeup. The weird character makeup is hilarious (and typical of an Eddie Murphy comedy), and the hair is exquisite.

A Trick of the Light
Kore-eda Hirokazu's first feature Maborosi is so lovely. It's a sad meditation on loss and learning to live with it, and I loved it, obviously. I love Kor-eda so much. I thought this movie was rather cold for most of its running time – it's shot in long shot for most of its running time; there are very few close-ups and we spend so much time so far away from these characters. But as it ended I burst into tears and had trouble stopping crying as my friends started talking about the movie. It's a lovely movie, and maybe one of the reasons I loved it is that it feels very Ozu. It's Kore-eda's first feature, and my friend Malia suggested that perhaps he was referencing Ozu a lot here, as he figured out his own style. There is no one better to imitate, so I think this makes perfect sense.
The title in Japanese, incidentally, means something like a trick of the light. I watched this with my unseen movie club. I have no idea how we got ahold of it.
